Livingstone College Honors Convocation

Scholarship

Chapter Members and student scholarship recipients from Winston-Salem

On Wednesday morning, April 19th, Livingstone College recognized students during the Dr. Samuel Edward Duncan Honors Convocation in Varick Auditorium. The theme was “Academic Excellence: The Foundation for the Career Journey Ahead.”

The speaker for the occasion was Mr. Nicholas Perkins, Chairman, President and CEO Perkins Management Services, Inc. His comments were excellent. He talked about the cost of freedom, those that came before who paid the price of what students are benefiting from now and that the cost is more than their tuition. He used scripture references to drive home his points and his personal journey as an young entrepreneur.

Perkins

Here he is (above) receiving special recognition for his achievements and community service from Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins. Perkins has made a $400,000 contribution to Livingstone toward a new cafeteria. His food service company runs the cafeteria at Livingstone.

He walks the talk!

An Omega Man, Perkins pauses for a photo (above) with Omega’s including Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins and Dr. State Alexander.

Members of the W-S Alumni Chapter, Orlando Mitchell, Sarah Alston and chapter president, Nigel Alston, attended the Convocation

President Alston presented scholarship awards to three students from Winston-Salem. Eight current students from Winston-Salem applied for a $1,000 scholarship from the chapter.

Chapter members were impressed with the quality of the submissions and decided to award three scholarships; one for $1,000 and two for $500. Students had to have a 2.5 GPA or higher, submit a letter of recommendation and complete an essay on the impact of receiving a scholarship from the chapter.

Wheeler

Elizabeth Wheeler was the recipient of the $1,000 award from the chapter. Elizabeth is a sophomore majoring in Education with a 3.2 GPA.

Percy

Percy Careathers III, a sophomore ComputerScience major with a 2.74 GPA, received a $500 award.

Mack

Brooklynn Mack is a sophomore with an interest in completing her BSW and MSW in route to becoming a professional social worker. She has a 3.4 GPA and was also awarded a $500 scholarship.

And here is chapter member Sarah Alston with Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta after the Convocation.

Deltas

A big thank you to all chapter members and those who have supported our activities and events to ensure support for Livingstone College and students, especially those from Winston-Salem.

It was great to have the opportunity and resources to make a positive impact in the lives of students.
